A.B. Frost: The Sporting Art

Arthur Burdett Frost was one of America’s greatest artists. More than a famous magazine illustrator, who became best known for his sporting prints and paintings, he covered a wide range of subjects in his art. Frost’s depictions of the rural farmer, lowly shop-keepers and housewives, local politicians and black citizens of the old south were a visual record of our country’s history. He was also a humorist with a lively cartoon style.

In this gallery I focus on his illustrations that cover sports: hunting and fishing, bicycling (Frost was an avid bike rider), golf and other outdoor activities. In future posts I’ll show examples of his cartoons and the realistic drawings and paintings that gave us a pictorial record of everyday life before 1900.
