A Stevan Dohanos Gallery

A Selection of his Saturday Evening Post Covers

In the long line of famous illustrators whose paintings regularly graced the covers of the Saturday Evening Post, a few jump out immediately. The name of Stevan Dohanos has to rank in the top three. Leyendecker had incredible style and flair. Norman Rockwell, well, he was Norman Rockwell.

But Dohanos brought an incredible skill and mid-western empathy to his depictions of American life. The Ohio-born artist built his illustration career slowly and didn’t sell his first cover to the Post until he was 35. He was an immediate success and quickly became a regular contributor, painting 123 covers in all. Here is a small gallery of some of his best. Dohanos also was very successful in his advertising work. My next blog will center on that portfolio of work.
